Ask Dr. SCSI - Does your Drive Screening Test map around the primary and grown defects or does it just tell you that you have them? Also is there a way to get this test to run in the multiple drive testing mode? Dr. SCSI

Q. Does your Drive Screening Test map around the primary and grown defects or does it just tell you that you have them? Also is there a way to get this test to run in the multiple drive testing mode?

A. If by “map around the primary and grown defects” you mean do we have software that specifically “skips” a primary/grown defect then the answer is no – the drive takes care of it automatically. As a concrete example suppose you did a sequential write test on blocks 0-thru-100. Block 50 at one point might have been at CHS (cylinder-head-sector) = 0-0-50, but then 0-0-50 became bad and was reassigned to CHS = 38-2-17. When we issue the write command to block 50 SCSItoolbox doesn’t know that we’re writing to 38-2-17 (and NOT 0-0-50) – the internal drive logics does all that. It goes without saying that it can be a huge performance hit if you’re writing data to a drive where lots of blocks are defective and had to be reassigned.

On your question about “multiple drive testing mode” we have our Disk Manufacturing Module (DMM) and this can log the # of primary/grown defects on multiple drives simultaneously.

Another very satisfied customer!
A plus

A very satisfied customer wrote in last week with this comment.

My thanks to your staff,  (especially Glenn Dean), for the prompt fix to the SCSItoolbox. Our customer is very happy with the system that he has and now loves the fact he can make backups of his perishable media. We will be buying more of your software as we have 3 more systems that have been ordered. Again much thanks.
